CORNING, NY - I WAS INDIAN Book Release and Poetry Reading Susan Deer Cloud, Editor - Anthology Release at the Rockwell Museum of Western Art
Thursday, September 24, 2009 5:30 p.m. - 7 p.m. Free and open to the public
The Rockwell Museum of Western Art will host a reading and reception to celebrate FootHills Publishing bringing out Volume I (Poetry) of I WAS INDIAN, a Native anthology edited by Susan Deer Cloud. Susan, an award-winning, highly published Métis Indian of Mohawk, Blackfoot and some Seneca lineage, will read alongside Monty Campbell, a Cayuga poet who grew up on the Cattaraugus reservation. They will read their own poetry. In the spirit of the Iroquois Tree of Peace whose Four White Roots invite people from all the directions to gather together in a good way, writers of non-Native background will join Susan and Monty in reading other poems by I WAS INDIAN's contemporary Native writers. The spirit of the evening will be one of saying that Turtle Island's first human beings, including in the East, are "not vanishing" but are still dreaming, creating, and changing as a multifarious, vibrant and viable community.
I WAS INDIAN will be on sale the evening of the reception and Susan and Monty will be signing copies for those who come to celebrate the powerful voices of the anthology. Words from the West Writing Workshop Series Local poet and publisher Michael Czarnecki will facilitate four writing workshops using the collection of the Rockwell Museum of Western Art as inspiration. Participants will peruse the Museum's galleries and then create poetry or short prose from particular works of art that they are drawn to.
A *chapbook, a small pocketsize booklet of writing, will be created and published from the works created over the course of the four workshops. Participants will receive a complimentary chapbook for each workshop attended.
The Words from the West workshops will be held over the course of four Saturdays this fall from 1 p.m. - 3 p.m. Participation in all four workshops is encouraged, but not required.
