Third Santa Fe Series
ROCKWELL MUSEUM OF WESTERN ART PRESENTS THE THIRD SANTA FE SERIES: 19TH CENTURY ARTISTS OR NEW MEXICO
May 6, 2004
Would you like to learn more about Western art? Understand the importance of artists like Georgia O'Keeffe, Joseph H. Sharp, the Taos Society of Artists and others. The Rockwell Museum of Western Art will be presenting the third and last public program in the Santa Fe Series on Wednesday, May 12 from 6:00-7:30 pm.
The 19th Century Artists of New Mexico will be presented by Elizabeth Hutchinson, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of American Art at Barnard College. Dr. Hutchinson will discuss how the local Native American and Hispanic traditions influenced the stylistic modes of Taos impressionism and Santa Fe modernism. Significant contextual issues of the rise of tourism in the southwest and the artists' engagement with the native people will frame her discussion.
Using images from the Rockwell Museum collection, she will discuss the work of the famed Taos Society of Artists including Joseph H. Sharp, Ernest Blumenschein, E. Martin Hennings, Eanger Irving Couse and others. The 19th Century Artists of New Mexico will inform museum members and prepare "Destination Santa Fe" travelers for their visit to the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum and other gallery visits in Santa Fe this summer.
The 19th Century Artists of Santa Fe is the last in a series of public programs about Santa Fe that will culminate this summer in an excursion to Santa Fe, from July 29 through August 1. This event filled tour, called Destination Santa Fe, New Mexico will include private gallery talks with artists and art collectors, and behind the scenes visits to the city's artistic and historical treasures. The Rockwell Museum is still accepting reservations for Destination Santa Fe, New Mexico. For more information and a detailed itinerary call (607) 974-2333.
