The romance - and reality - of the American West in real-time will be on display as National Geographic Greatest Photographs of the American West opens simultaneously in 10 national venues, including the Rockwell Museum of Western Art in Corning, New York. The show presents for the first time in one exhibition an unprecedented collection of iconic images of the West created by 83 National Geographic photographers over a span of some 125 years and including such well-known names as William Henry Jackson and Ansel Adams.
A companion book to the exhibition, featuring 175 photographs, is on sale in the Museum Trading Post Shop.
National Geographic Greatest Photographs of the American West represents the first time a photography exhibition of this magnitude has opened at so many U.S. venues simultaneously. The exhibition presents a powerful and nuanced portrait of the West over more than a century, and it's exciting that the medium of photography allows multiple openings across the country for greater impact in sharing the combined vision of such an important group of photographers.
Participating museums include:
Booth Western Art Museum Buffalo Bill Historical Center Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art Gilcrease Museum National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum National Geographic Museum National Museum of Wildlife Art Rockwell Museum of Western Art C.M. Russell Museum Stark Museum of Art
The exhibition is organized by the National Museum of Wildlife Art in collaboration with the National Geographic Society and Museums West. Presented by the Mays Family Foundation.
