Music, Margaritas & Sunsets on the Terrace

May 26, 2004

Enjoy Music, Margaritas and Sunsets on the Terrace at the Rockwell Museum of Western Art

The Rockwell Museum of Western Art is excited to announce an evening of music, libation, and camaraderie overlooking the rooftops of Corning's Gaffer District. "Music, Margaritas & Sunsets on the Terrace" will take place on Wednesday, June 9 from 5:30 pm to 8:00 pm. The event is open to the public. It is free to members and $3.00 for not-yet-members.

For the audience's listening pleasure, a local favorite, the Duvid Smering Quartet, featuring the singing talents of Ithaca great Cookie Coogan, will provide swinging, smooth jazz sounds. A cash bar, featuring margaritas and other drinks, will be available as well as chips and salsa.

In addition, attendees can explore the museum and the two current special exhibitions. Navajo Rug Exhibition: Warp & Weft will be in the Special Exhibition Gallery and the Works on Paper Gallery until September 15, 2004. This exhibition features 21 Navajo rugs from the museum's permanent collection. The rugs were made over a period spanning eight decades from approximately 1875 through the early 1960's, and represent ten distinct Navajo styles. The second special exhibition, The People: Zuni at the Turn of the Millennium, displays life-size portraits of Zuni Native Americans in tradition dress by noted photographer Thorney Leiberman. This exhibition is in the Focus Galleries on the third floor until September 6, 2004.

"We want our local community to be aware of the treasures that exist within the museum and view the museum as a gathering place for learning and entertainment," stated Cindy Weakland, Public Programs Director.

The Rockwell Museum of Western Art owns one of the largest and finest collections of Western American art in the United States, with some 1100 works of art in its permanent collection rotated through its 12 galleries. All of the Rockwell Museum's exhibits and services - galleries, events, Artpacks, Trading Post, and the adjacent Cantina - reflect the people, places, and ideas of the West, immersing visitors in an authentic Western experience. There is always something new to see at the Rockwell Museum of Western Art. Galleries displaying the permanent collection are based on themes: Wilderness, Buffalos, Horses, Indians, Cowboys, and the Southwest. Here, myths are explored and new ways of thinking about art encouraged.

The Rockwell Museum of Western Art is located in the restored historic Gaffer District of Corning, located in the Southern Finger Lakes Region of New York State. It is open daily except New Year's Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. During May, June, September (after Labor Day) and October hours are 9:00 am to 5:00 pm daily. Extended summer hours for July 1 through Labor Day are 9:00 am to 8:00 pm. Further information is available by contacting the Museum at 607-937-5386.
