Maynard Dixon's West

Space Silence Spirit: Maynard Dixon's West: The Hays Collection

February 1 - June 3, 2007

Space Silence Spirit

Of all the great "Western" artists, Maynard Dixon is the only one to be a born and bred westerner. His famous predecessors in the genre, Remington, Russell, Beirstadt, Moran, all haled from Europe or the Eastern United States; Dixon was born in the western boomtown of Fresno, California. In fact, only on a couple of occasions in the past has Dixon been exhibited in East coast galleries. But it is the Rockwell Museum's distinct honor to host Space Silence Spirit: Maynard Dixon's West: The Hays Collection - the first exhibition of this renowned artist in an Eastern United States Museum.

The collection of paintings, drawings and illustrations that comprise the collection of Mr. and Mrs. A.P. Hays spans the years 1897-1942. Visitors will also be treated to photographs of the artist taken by his wife, the acclaimed photographer Dorthea Lange. This rare exhibition of a privately held collection will offer a glimpse into Dixon's great talent and his life and travels throughout the west - from his Native California to Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, and Montana. Space Silence Spirit: Maynard Dixon's West: The Hays Collection will be on display at from February 1 to June 3, 2007.
