What you'll find at the Rockwell Museum of Western Art:
Don't miss Elemental Solitude: The Landscapes of Clyde Aspevig, an internationally known collection created by the artist to be hung specifically in the galleries of the Rockwell Museum of Western Art. Inspired by locations all over the United States and Europe, award-winning artist Clyde Aspevig has captured moments of fleeting light, graceful shapes, and the majesty of nature. His paintings are not theatrical sets intended to reinforce regional mythology, but rather a record of places that he perceives as already disappearing during his own lifetime, subjects worthy of both artistic and societal preservation.
The Museum was honored to host Aspevig and guests for a Plein-Air Picnic on August 3, 2005. Aspevig afforded spectators the rare opportunity to witness a live painting demonstration at the picnic. Aspevig has generously donated the completed painting to the Museum for a raffle, the proceeds of which will support future Museum programming. Tickets will be available for purchase at the Museum now through October 12.
In addition, the Museum has collaborated with the artist to produce a magnificent catalogue featuring full color reproductions of many of the works you will see in the exhibition. The catalogue includes essays from Corning's own Tom Buechner, a noted author, artist and art historian, and the Rockwell's Curator of Collections, Sheila K. Hoffman. The catalog is available for purchase in the Museum's Trading Post.
Bring your children and enjoy the Museum's Artpack program or shop at the Museum's Trading Post!
What about taking a backpacking trip through the West? The Museum's Artpacks - backpacks filled with interesting information, creative activities, puzzles and games - are a young trailblazer's guide to the Museum. They approach the Museum's collection through four of the most enduring and appealing subjects of Western art: cowboys, Native Americans, wilderness, and new to the collection is Horse! Best of all, they're a proven success. Although the Artpacks are designed for children from ages five through twelve, their appeal is actually much, much wider. Adults and older students love them, and families are finding that pre-schoolers enjoy them, too!
Shop at the Museum's Trading Post during your visit! A gift shop with Western and Native American items, the Trading Post is a great place to shop for music, pottery, weavings, books, and reproductions. The Trading Post is stocked with new and exciting jewelry for both men and women, and unique gifts; the shop changes every day!
