Ansel Adams show extended

By Popular Demand, Rockwell Museum extends Ansel Adams: Celebration of Genius

August 16, 2006

CORNING, NY -Over 10,000 visitors have filled the Rockwell Museum of Western Art's galleries in celebration since June - celebrating the genius of a man that has made a lasting impact. The Rockwell Museum of Western Art's summer blockbuster exhibition *Ansel Adams: Celebration of Genius, which opened June 8 and was scheduled to run through September 4, will now be extended through Labor Day weekend. The exhibition, which honors Adams, will captivate audiences now through September 8.

As the Museum continues to celebrate its 30th Anniversary in 2006, free admission will be offered to visitors the 30th of every month this year. Membership to the Museum includes everyday yearlong free admission.

While many come to know the photographers work through widely published books, postcards, posters, and calendars, relatively few have actually seen his lushly printed original images. Inspired by the 100th anniversary of Adams's birth in 2002, the George Eastman House International Museum of Photography and Film, Rochester, NY, revisited its extensive collection of Adams's work, creating a new exhibition of 150 photographs that reflects Adams's full career.

Ansel Adams: Celebration of Genius presents work from the 1920s through the 1960s, including an early 1927 portfolio (one of only fifty produced) of Parmelian prints (gelatin silver emulsion on parchment paper). This is the first time George Eastman House has included this portfolio from its collection in an exhibition. Featured are many of Adams's most famous images of the American West - Mount Williamson from Manzanar, California, ca. 1944, and Monolith, the Face of Half Dome, 1927. But prepare to discover equally stupendous, (if less well-known) images such as Mud Hills, Arizona or Water and Foam, or the wonderful abstract titled simply, Stained Wallpaper Near Alturas, Calif. Many will be surprised to see that Adams did not confine himself to landscapes, but also made portraits and other subjects as humble as fence posts into images nearly as monumental as his beloved mountain ranges. (* Ansel Adams: Celebration of Genius, was organized by George Eastman House International Museum of Photography and Film)

Upcoming at the Rockwell Museum of Western Art

Fields & Streams: Hunting and Wildlife in the Great American West
September 22, 2006- January 21, 2007

'Hunting' and 'wildlife'. For many of us today, these terms conjure images of sport or recreation. But in earlier times, human survival was dependent on the abundance of wildlife and successful hunting of it. The Museum's upcoming exhibition Fields & Streams: Hunting and Wildlife in the Great American West will explore such facets of predator and prey through the art of some of the best-known western artists. The exhibition draws on works from the Museum's own collection of paintings, drawings and firearms, as well as works from the Genessee Country Village Museum John L. Wehle Art Gallery of Sporting Art. From the multiple perspectives of Native Americans, European settlers, and even the animals, Fields & Streams tells the story of survival in the American frontier.

The Museum renews exhibits several times each year, rotating its large permanent collection of art through galleries based on themes: wilderness, buffalo, horse, Indian and cowboy. Here, myths are explored and new ways of thinking about art encouraged.

Accredited by the American Association of Museums, the Rockwell Museum of Western Art is located in the center of the Finger Lakes Wine Country of New York State and in the heart of Corning's Gaffer District. The Museum is open to the public seven days a week; summer hours are 9:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m.
